This little gamer went to market…
As I sit in the warmth of my kitchen on a cold be-twistmas day, it seems a good time to reflect on the experience of going to market for the first time.
I apologise now if being cold becomes a repeat motif in this piece of writing but oh my fingers and my thumbs, if there is anything I have learnt about selling board games and puzzles on a market stall, it is that it is REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY COLD and it is REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT to try and not turn into a giant icicle, get frostbite, fall over, cry and go on and on and on and on about how cold you feel!
I obviously did go on about it before Christmas as I am now the proud owner of not one but two hot water bottles, not one or two but three sets of thermal underwear, a lot of warm socks, a hat, some fleecy pjs and an extremely fluffy dressing gown - all bought for me as Christmas presents by my nearest and dearest! It’s a shame I don’t have a summer birthday as I could mention feeling a bit hot to my family around the time of this date and acquire not one but two fans, a pair of flip-flops and a variety of different coloured vest tops for summer market stall survival!
In all seriousness, I am obvs very glad that I now have the full winter survival kit and have had an extremely snuggly Christmas!
Other tips to survive the cold on a market stall would include: regular walks around the block, nipping to the coffee/donut/coffee/donut shop, having the occasional gander to see other stall holders and going for a wee (with the extra plus of being able to run one’s hands under the hot water tap….ahhhhh…bliss!)…basically not standing still until one’s toes drop off!
Other than the cold, I have learnt that market stalls are places where you get to meet interesting people including those who are new to modern day board gaming and are really delighted to see so many different games and those who are gamers and who are really delighted to see a board games stall in a market (not a common site I have been told!). I think my lovely helpful bubble market chum Celine - would agree that despite the cold, the interaction with customers…(and the donuts)…make it a fun day out!
Now I have all the kit I am raring to go in 2021….I just hope it’s not too long before I and all the other weekend market stall traders (who sell stuff other than food!) can get our thermals on, fill up our hottle bottles and spread our message of cheery market joy to any of the general public who wander our way…
And if you kindly bought a game or two from the Get Your Game On Ltd weekend market stall I hope you or your loved ones felt a cheery glow as you enjoyed playing it in your toastie living room with a nice hot drink in your hand. Board games may be purchased on a COLD winter’s day but in my experience they are best played in the WARM!
